Counselling with Rosa Stevens

Trauma-Informed Practice

Trauma-informed support, at a pace you can hold.

Safety, respect and choice are at the heart of the work. We begin with you and what you need from counselling.

What does trauma-informed counselling mean?

Being trauma-informed is different from being a specialist trauma therapist.

It means understanding that difficult or overwhelming experiences can affect how we think, feel, behave, relate to others and experience the world. As a trauma-informed therapist, Rosa takes this understanding into account when working with you.

The focus is on creating a safe, respectful and collaborative space where you remain in control of what you share and when. You do not have to revisit painful memories or talk through everything that has happened to benefit from counselling.

Rather than assuming that everyone needs trauma-focused treatment, the work begins with understanding you, your experiences and what you need from therapy.

In simple terms: trauma-informed means understanding how trauma can affect someone and making sure the therapeutic relationship and work take that into account. It does not automatically mean providing specialist trauma treatment.

EMDR training and suitability

Rosa has completed European EMDR Level 1 training and is undertaking further EMDR training at Queen's University Belfast, with Level 3 training expected in December 2026. EMDR forms part of her ongoing professional development. Whether it is appropriate depends on your individual circumstances, therapeutic needs, readiness and Rosa's current training and competence.

EMDR is not automatically offered to every client, and Rosa has not completed EMDR accreditation. You can ask about Rosa’s approach before deciding whether to book. If you proceed, her assessment explores your needs and suitability; you remain free to consider other services.
