Getting the right support

The right help, at the right level, at the right time.

Counselling is one kind of support among many. This page helps you check whether Reset is the right fit now — or whether another service would serve you better first.

Need help right now?

Reset is not a crisis service and cannot offer emergency or same-day support. If you feel unsafe, are thinking about ending your life, or need immediate help, please contact one of the services below. Rosa cannot monitor messages or bookings out of hours.

Looking for a diagnosis?

Counsellors and psychotherapists do not diagnose mental health conditions (such as depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, autism or personality disorders) or prescribe medication.

If you are looking for a diagnosis, please speak to your GP. They can assess you and, where appropriate, refer you to the Adult Mental Health Team (in Northern Ireland, your local Health and Social Care Trust's mental health services) or another specialist service.

You are still welcome to have counselling alongside this — many people find it helpful while waiting for, or after receiving, a diagnosis. Rosa may also suggest speaking with your GP if it seems that more specialist support would help.

The stepped care model, explained

The NHS and Health and Social Care in Northern Ireland use a "stepped care" approach: you are offered the least intensive support that is likely to help, and can step up or down as your needs change. It is not a ladder you must climb — you can start at whichever step fits.

  1. 1

    Self-help & early support

Information, guided self-help, wellbeing apps, community and peer support. Suits mild or recently started difficulties.

  2. 2

    Talking therapies & counselling

Counselling, couples counselling and similar psychological support for mild to moderate difficulties. This is where Reset works.

  3. 3

    More intensive psychological therapy

Specialist or longer-term therapy for moderate to severe or more complex difficulties, often through NHS psychological services.

  4. 4

    Specialist mental health care

Adult / community mental health teams offering assessment, diagnosis, medication review and multi-disciplinary care, usually via a GP referral.

  5. 5

    Crisis & inpatient care

Crisis / home treatment teams and hospital care for people at serious risk. Accessed through 999, A&E, GP or existing teams.

At your assessment, Rosa will talk with you about whether Reset is the right step. If your needs are better met elsewhere, she will be honest about that and signpost you — that is part of good, ethical care.

Working ethically: BACP & SCoPEd

BACP Ethical Framework

Rosa is a BACP Accredited member and works within the Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions. In practice this means: putting your wellbeing first, working within her competence, being honest about what counselling can and cannot offer, respecting your autonomy and confidentiality, keeping clear boundaries, attending regular supervision and ongoing professional development, and signposting when another service is more suitable.

Read the BACP Ethical Framework

SCoPEd framework

SCoPEd is a shared framework agreed by BACP, NCPS and other professional bodies. It sets out the training, practice and competences expected of counsellors and psychotherapists at different levels, so the public can understand practitioners' experience. Rosa's BACP accreditation and NCPS Accredited Professional registration, with over 10 years and 5,000+ clinical hours, reflect this.
